TRACKS

The organizers have considered that the V Encuentro is at a cross roads as it approaches the closing of a cycle. For this reason it was decided to favor a workshop-type format which includes intervention from experts only at the beginning, over the conference or panel format that prevailed in the past. The objective is to achieve greater participation and depth in our shared experience this time around, one that would help generate a certain degree of consensus about our views and our stake regarding the main border environmental issues. In order to accomplish this, it was deemed necessary that the efforts of the participants, instead of being dispersed, needed to be concentrated around no more than 4 issues. The intention was to identify themes with high priority at this time because they involve addressing a broad variety of relevant issues, border wide.

We are aware of the importance of sharing knowledge about a broader mosaic of experiences and concerns, which has been the tradition in previous Encuentros. That is why the process of deciding to exclude other themes was a difficult one. However, we hope that the community of border environmentalists will value and feel drawn both by the experience offered by the new format as well as with these four themes which will be discussed in separate and parallel workshops or ‘Tracks”.

1.- Water for Ecosystems, Water for People

2.- Environmental Contamination and Public Health on the Border

3.- Border Security Policies and their Impacts on the Environment and Environmental Community

4.- The Border Environmental Community in the Smart Growth Era
